Batur Lake - Kintamani Bali

Batur LakeBatur Lake is a beautiful lake located in Bangli district where it is the largest lakes in Bali Island with panoramic view from the top hill village of Kintamani. It is a base of Caldera in the east and south east of Batur Mount which is resembles a crescent shape, with length approximately 7.5 km, width less than 2,5 km. The width of the lake water is about 16 km and it is set on 1031m above sea level with an estimated water depth of 70 m and contains the water above 815,38 million cubic meter.

Batur KintamaniBatur Lake is the old crater of Mount Batur, a still active volcano next to it. It is located on the northern part of Bali. The largest lake overshadowed by the active volcano is located in Bangli Regency, at the northeast of Bali. Batur Lake is the widest lake in this island. It lies down in the feet of Mount Batur and Mount Abang. The lake is classified as a "neutral-dilute" lake because there is no known underlying hydrothermal activity, and the abundant rainfall more than quenches any such activity. There is a hot spring right by the lake. We can enjoy the spectacular scenery of Batur Lake from Kintamani. Across the lake, only reachable by boat, lies Trunyan village, where the Bali Aga people live. The surrounding of the lake is a favorite place for picks self up. At Batur Lake we can see the scenic view and feel cool atmosphere. Bangli's mountainous region center is around the spectacular volcanic crater (or caldera) of Batur. Mount Batur adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake, all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. The place is a great day trips, trekking or just to get away from the daily activity.

Mount Batur itself is actually just a small volcano, but sets in the heart of a huge crater 14km in diameter. Adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake, all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. As the road rises steadily from Bangli or Tampaksiring, nothing in the surrounding gray landscape of bushes and garden plots suggests the presence of a volcano. But over one more small ridge a dizzying view awaits the ayes, encompassing the crater and beyond. From Panelokan, the main road runs right round the rim towards Kintamani, the panorama shifting as we circle around the crater.

One very interesting excursion in Batur is the climb down the inside of the crater from Penelokan to Kedisan. We can then drive around the smaller Mount Batur, through Songan. From Toya Bungkah, boats cross the lake to a Bali Aga village called Trunyan. This place is notorious for its mortuary traditions. Instead of cremating the dead, as Balinese do throughout most of the island, the Trunyan communities leave the bodies to decompose naturally in a special cemetery.

Lovina Beach Bali

Lovina’s black sand beaches are quite lovely and lend themselves well to exploration on foot at a leisurely pace. The sea is very calm here and is safe for swimming. The feeling on the beaches is one of laid-back tranquility with small, colourfully decorated traditional outriggers called perahu dotted along the shoreline. These are a reminder that you are in a traditional fishing community. There are a few hawkers, but nothing like as many as on the southern beaches, and this is as good a place as any in Bali to explore quiet beaches at your own pace. At the highest of tides the beaches can get a little difficult to traverse in places, so it is best to time your walks for a falling tide. Be aware that many of the 'black sand' beaches (particularly in the central area) are an unappealing dirty brown with significant amounts of plastic rubbish.

The small road that runs down to the beach-front from the main east-west coast route at Kalibukuk is called Jalan Bina Ria. Turn to the coast just past the only set of traffic lights on the north road. At the beach end of this road is a rather wonderful dolphin statue (complete with slightly horrific one-jawed rusting dolphins). Apart from being a notable piece of kitsch, this is a reminder of the reason for the initial drive beind tourist development at Lovina (dolphins, obviously). Mini wooden and stone replicas of this statue are for sale widely in the area.

About Lovina
Lovina is a relatively new name coined in the 1950s by the late king of Buleleng (Buleleng Regency) Anak Agung Panji Tisna, with a good eye for future tourism-based development. It started with small lodge built on his own land and named Lovina. After going through struggle of ups and downs, finally the community accepted the presence of Lovina. Nowadays the name Lovina is used for the stretch of seven traditional villages, which all slightly merge into one over ten kilometersof the main road which hugs the north coast to the west of Singaraja: Temukus, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Banyualit and Kaliasem. Kalibukuk is the main hub of this area and is often thought of "Lovina town centre".

If traveling along the main coast road from Singaraja, you turn towards the Lovina coast at the only set of traffic lights on the entire north road. Impressive Balinese gates frame the entrances to the two roads where most of the restaurants and hotels are. Western style minimarts and ATMs are located on the busy main road. Lovina offers very reasonably priced accommodation from no star home stays to about three star resorts with pools. Posh private villas are tucked away all along the coast too. Food is cheaper than Ubud or the south coast by about a third.

The whole stretch of coastline in the north is fringed by quite narrow black sand beaches, which are accessed by a multitude of small lanes which run perpendicular to the east-west coast road. The beaches are generally safe for swimming, and the waters of Bali's north coast, in direct contrast to the crashing surf of the south, are relatively calm. From a distance, the water does not look too clean due to the colour of the sand but it is in fact almost always crystal clear. The locals do make an attempt to clear away plastic flotsam too.

Diving, snorkelling fishing dolphin watching, diving on coral reefs are the main activities, but perhaps above all else, this is an area in which to relax and take in a very slow, traditional pace of life. Lovina is ideal for family groups with young children or older adventurers who want to kick back and quickly become part of the community. It can get a little crowded in July and August, but outside that peak season, this is a quiet part of the island.

Lovina also has a large number of tourist stalls which are limited to the area of beach between the dolphin statue and the main restaurant road. The stall holders are not as aggresive as those in other parts of Bali. Open air bars often provide loud, live music in which patrons can participate and it's not unusual to see foreigners jamming with locals. Many foreigners have made this locality home and the place gets busy at sundown when both locals and foreigners come down to the beach for 'happy hour' and a good meal. There is a nightly game of beach volleyball happening in the car park in front of the main bars too.

Kuta Beach Bali

Kuta Beach is located on the western side of the island's narrow isthmus and is considered Bali's most famous beach resort destination. Once a simple, rustic and quiet fishing village, Kuta Beach has witnessed a transformation over the past years due to the rise of various accommodations, dining and shopping options. The rapid growth owes much to visitors, beachcombers and art lovers from nearby Australia. Expatriates also helped pioneer surfing in Kuta, as well.

About Bali Cremation Ceremony Tour
Hindu funerals in Bali are intensely suggestive ceremonies of great cultural and religious significance. Funerals are centred on cremation of the body requiring a complex apparatus and characterized by a large following known as ngaben or pelebon. This practice is considered essential if the 5 elements making up the microcosm of the human body are to be returned to their original residence, the universe’s macrocosm. The five elements, Panca Maha Bhuta, are the earth (pertiwi), water (apah), fire (teja), air (bayu), and ether (akasa).

Since the primordial dimension can only be attained through water and fire, the ashes are dispersed in the water of the sea or if the distance is too great, in a river. The funeral ceremony is generally led by a priest and punctuated by a lavish offering of gifts. For the occasion, a large bullock-shaped wooden structure is built and then entirely covered with white drapes if the deceased belongs to a priestly caste in black.

There are ceremonies for every stage of Balinese life but often the last ceremony--cremation--is the biggest. A Balinese cremation can be an amazing, spectacular, colourful, noisy and exciting event. In fact it often takes so long to organize a cremation that years have passed since the death. During that time the body is temporarily buried. Of course an auspicious day must be chosen for the cremation and since a big cremation can be very expensive business many less wealthy people may take the opportunity of joining in at a larger cremation and sending their own dead on their way at the same time. Brahmans, however, must be cremated immediately.

Apart from being yet another occasion for Balinese noise and confusion it's a fine opportunity to observe the incredible energy the Balinese put into creating real works of art which are totally ephemeral. A lot more than a body gets burnt at the cremation. The body is carried from the burial ground (or from the deceased's home if it's and 'immediate' cremation) to the cremation ground in a high, multi-tiered tower made of bamboo, paper, string, tinsel, silk, cloth, mirrors, flowers and anything else bright and colourful you can think of. The tower is carried on the shoulders of a group of men, the size of the group depending on the importance of the deceased and hence the size of the tower. The funeral of a former rajah of high priest may require hundreds of men to tote the tower.

A long the way to the cremation ground certain precautions must be taken to ensure that the deceased's spirit does not find its way back home. Loose spirits around the house can be a real nuisance. To ensure this doesn't happen requires getting the spirits confused as to their whereabouts, which you do by shaking the tower, running it around in circles, spinning it around, throwing water at it, generally making the trip to the cremation ground anything but a stately funeral crawl.

With us you can truly feel like Balinese, because you are invited to be part of the people in the society which is paricipating the ceremony. We will prepare your dress, sarong and some gift to carry for the family in Balinese way. Beside that, our guide will always accompany and lead you with some information about the ceremony.

The springs are separated into 3 areas; the top area is the hottest and the next two areas progressively cooler. The last has water falling from about 20 feet and it can give you a great massage. The water is green and has a slight slimy feel. The kids enjoyed visiting and having a swim followed by an ice cream at the restaurant. You will need to take towels as they are not available and it costs 5000 Rp for a family to get in. If you decide to stay for lunch there is an excellent restaurant (Komala Tirta) at the hotel on the left just before the entrance to the springs.

This hot wellspring source is predictably built since of hundreds of year ago and since the Japanese colonize the Indonesia, this place has developed into three pools to relocate the water for taking a bath. The Japanese had also developed its military officer resort close to this area. Having bathing in the heat water containing the brimstone, it will be able to heal the skin disease. The pools are distinctive with eight carved stone dragons pouring water into the first pool (the hottest pool), five more for the second pool (cooler then the first pool) and one final 3 meter-high dragon serving the third pool. Traditional belief holds that this hot spring can cure illness. When visiting, try this hot spring in the morning or at the night time instead of midday time. Use the changing rooms and locker under the restaurant. You must wear a swimsuit and soaps are not permitted in the pool. There is an adjacent outdoor shower provided.

There are three baths were you can puddle in 38ºC sulfur water. The first bath is filled with dragon statues spewing water, which then overflows in the second bath located lower. The first bath is shallow and seems to be slightly warmer than the others. Along the walls there is a small ridge where you can sit in the water.
Be careful when climbing down the stairs though. The water is not that clear and the steps are not really visible. When I was dozing off in the hot water I was awaken by a huge splash. Somebody had slipped down the stairs and stumbled into the pool with less grace.

Just like the other pools, the third pool offers a great place to soak in the warm water too. Here the water pours from 3 m high giving you a great back massage. You are not allowed to jump in the bath nude and you can’t bring your bar of soap with you to the springs. This is not that surprising considering it would be a horrific sightseeing dozens of people scrubbing their armpits.

Lovina Beach Bali

Lovina Beach
Lovina Dolphin

The traditions and culture of Bali Aga villages derives from the Pre-Hindu animistic culture. One of things preserved from the pre-Hindu period is the way the religious life is organized. In Penglipuran there is no caste system – all villagers are Shudras – and the process of choosing the priests differs from the way it is done in other places. Usually in Balinese villages the priests are supposed to belong to the caste of the Brahmans, who are forming the highest caste in Balinese society.

The village was build with three distinctive parts, respecting the “Tri Mandala” concept which describes a place based on the location, function and level of purity. The first part is the holy part with the temple. The second is the housing, where the people live. The third is the place where the dead bodies are buried and where the garbage is thrown. The same structure is applied for the structure of each house compound.

In the front side of the courtyard, oriented towards the holy mountain in the east (Mount Agung – the place of the gods), there is the temple of the house, then in the middle, more westwards, there is the traditional kitchen and the house in which the family lives. Agung Volcano or Gunung Agung

Mount Agung Volcano
Mount Agung, Indonesian Gunung Agung (“Great Mountain”), Dutch Piek Van Bali (“Peak of Bali”),  volcano, northeastern Bali, Indonesia. The highest point in Bali and the object of traditional veneration, it rises to a height of 9,888 feet (3,014 m). In 1963 it erupted after being dormant for 120 years; some 1,600 people were killed and 86,000 left homeless.

After more than 100 years of slumber, Mt. Agung came back to life on February 18, 1963. Loud noises and a cloud rising from the crater were noticed, then the ejection of bombs and blocks.

On February 24, 1963, highly viscous lava flows began to travel down the northern flank of the volcano, reaching a length of 7 km in about 18 to 20 days and an elevation of 510 m above sea level. The flows were about 0.5-0.8 km wide and 30-40 m thick. Rough estimates indicate a total volume of these flows of about 50 million cubic meters.

After that phase, the eruption became more and more explosive, and on March 17, 1963, the paroxysmal sub-Plinian eruption took place, generating a eruptino column of 8-10 km height that collapsed to form devastating pyroclastic flows. These flows reached distances of up to 15 km from the crater following vallezs to the south and east, at speeds of about 60 km/hour. Many villages were destroyed and more than 1000 people lost their lives. Heavy tephra fall occurred in areas west of the volcano, where up to 50-70 cm of ash were deposited.

In May, the south peak of the crater wall collapsed, lowering its height for about 200 meters. The lowest crater wall at present is the upper end of Langon river (2600 m).

According to one Balinese myth, the deities made mountains for their thrones and placed the highest, Mount Agung, in Bali. According to another myth, the deities found the island of Bali unstable and wobbling and, to still it, set down upon it the holy mountain of Hinduism, Mahameru, renamed
